Sciatica and Chiropractic

sciatica relief

Sciatica affects millions of people every year and 84% of people worldwide will experience back pain at some point in their life.

How to Get Rid of Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition which is actually misunderstood by most sufferers.  This condition is better described as a set of symptoms that arrive at a diagnosis, and not just a simple pain pattern.  More important is the causes of the condition which are commonly overlooked, and what needs to be done to alleviate it.

Sciatica affects millions of people every year and 84% of people worldwide will experience back pain at some point in their life.  Common symptoms include, but are not limited to, radiating pain down one or both of the legs sometimes to the feet, numbness/tingling in the legs, and weakness in one or both of the legs/feet.

Causes of Sciatica

In all my years of practice, the cause of sciatica continually traces back to one problem: a spinal disc issue.  The nerves leave the spine between the vertebral bones; right where the disc is.  If the intervertebral disc herniates, bulges, tears, or degenerates it causes pressure on the nerve which becomes irritated and causes symptoms.

Your nerves control EVERYTHING in your body, and the SCIATIC NERVE is only part of this system.  You may hear a lot about the piriformis muscle putting pressure on the sciatic nerve causing sciatica, but remember, the muscle is supplied by the nerve which traces back to the spine (your low back).

The process I have described is a mechanical issue, and many do not address this condition properly, and that is why so many people suffer with SCIATICA every few months.  The merry-go-round of pain is fairly easy to get off of.

Treatments

Let’s begin with the most common form of treatment, medication.  As I described above, sciatica is a bio-mechanical problem with the spine (most of the time), and medication turns off the pain receptors in the body; yet does nothing to “fix” the bio-mechanical issue.  Another option is surgery, but remember, surgery is permanent and there is no guarantee it will alleviate your pain (leave it absolutely last).

There are two very successful forms of treatment for sciatica: spinal decompression therapy and spinal manipulation.  Spinal decompression therapy essentially stretches the spine until a negative pressure is created within the disc and allows healing to occur naturally, alleviating sciatica pain. Secondly, spinal manipulation helps to lightly reposition malpositioned bones to take the pressure off of the disc and nerves allowing nerve function to restore naturally, also alleviating sciatica pain.
